A partner with Blumling & Gusky LLP, Ms. Sweeney practices in the firm’s Construction and Surety, Real Estate and Land Use, Labor and Employment, and Corporate areas. Ms. Sweeney concentrates her practice in construction, real estate, labor, employment and commercial litigation. She also has a broad range of experience in counseling businesses regarding labor and employment issues, and has defended employers in various employment matters, including alleged breaches of non-competition covenants, discrimination claims and wage payment disputes, as well as labor disputes before the National Labor Relations Board. In addition, Ms. Sweeney has represented business owners and developers in various construction, land use, zoning and development matters before local governmental and zoning bodies concerning projects such as retail shopping centers, restaurants, light industrial facilities, office buildings, and planned residential developments. She has also represented property owners in various eminent domain proceedings.
Ms. Sweeney is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the American Bar Association. A past member of the Minority, Women and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Certification Appeal Board for Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Ms. Sweeney currently serves as a dispute resolution neutral on the American Arbitration Association’s National Construction Panel. Ms. Sweeney is a graduate of Leadership Development Initiative IX, a leadership development and community service program for the Pittsburgh region, as well as the Leadership OnBoard V Program. A member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Chapter 161, she also is a member of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Pittsburgh. Ms. Sweeney also serves on the Board of Directors for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Ms. Sweeney received her B.A. with honors and distinction in English in 1990 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her J.D. in 1993 from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she served as a staff member, and later as Executive Editor, of the Journal of Law & Commerce, as well as the Co-Chair of the Women’s Bar Association. She is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Ms. Sweeney has published several articles and presented various seminars on land use, employment and labor law issues. Ms Sweeney was also selected by her peers as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer for the year of 2006.
